Meningitis ACWY

Meningicoccal disease (meninigitis and septicaemia) is a rare but life-threatening disease caused by meningococcal bacteria.

Anyone who is eligible for the Meningitis ACWY vaccine should have it but it is particularly needed in new university students as many students meet a mix with lots of new people and meningococcal bacteria carried at the back of the throat is most prevalent in this group of people.

If you are about to go to university you can ask your GP for this vaccine until your 25th birthday, if you missed having it at school or before coming to the UK to study. If you do not want to get it from your GP then you can get it from your local pharmacy as a private service.

The Meningitis ACWY vaccine is a requirement to enter Saudi Arabia. Those planning on travelling for Hajj/Umrah will need a vaccine and proof of vaccination before being allowed into the country. Those travelling for Hajj/Umrah must be vaccinated at least 10 days before departure
