Cold sores are blisters that can develop around the lips or the mouth. They are common and appear as a result of a viral infection called herpes simplex.

Cold sores often start with a tingling, itching or burning sensation around your mouth. Small fluid-filled sores then appear, usually on the edges of your lower lip.They are highly contagious especially when the blisters burst.

Once infected, the virus lies dormant. Every so often the virus is activated by certain triggers. This can be sunlight, fatigue, hormonal changes, injury to the area.
